Food science team to compete in knowledge bowl


TUSKEGEE, Ala. (March 28, 2014) — The Tuskegee University Food and Nutritional Sciences Team will make their first appearance in a food knowledge competition today. The three-day Food Science and Technology Regional College Bowl Competition for the Southeast Area is being held at Alabama A&M University in Normal, Ala. 

This is the first time Tuskegee will participate in the event, which has been in existence since 1985. The winning team will advance to the national championship, which will be held in New Orleans in June. All finalists receive a $1,000 travel grant. The national champion earns a $1,000 award, and the runner-up a $750 award.

According to the competition’s webpage, the college bowl tests students’ knowledge on food science and technology, history of foods and food processing, food law, and general food-related trivia.

The Tuskegee team members are: Joe Tumwebaze, team captain; Naresh Shahi, Aja West, Jhaelyn Elam, Terrisha Buckley and Nemuel Bonner. 

Other schools in the competition include: Alabama A&M University, Clemson University, Louisiana State University, University of Florida, University of Georgia and Mississippi State University.
