Sellers selected for national leadership development program

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Cynthia Sellers, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management has been chosen as one of 21 senior-level administrators in higher education nationwide to participate in a year-long Executive Leadership Academy. Program participants are selected by the Council of Independent Colleges and the American Academic Leadership Institute. Sellers is the only administrator representing an historically black institution.

Individuals chosen for the program are vice presidents or cabinet officers in higher education who aspire to the presidency of an independent college or university. Starting in July, Sellers will participate in two seminars in Washington, D.C., ongoing webinars, special assignments and a mentoring program. In addition, she will develop an experiential learning plan focused on specific areas of presidential responsibility and complete a series of readings and case studies.

CIC president Richard Ekman said the program’s competition was intense.

“The review committee found the nomination materials to be most impressive. They (and I) believe that Sellers has the potential for highly effective leadership as a college or university president,” Ekman said.

"I am very grateful to President Gilbert L. Rochon for nominating me for this executive leadership program. Being selected as one of the 21 participants in the 2013-2014 Executive Leadership Academy is an honor,” Sellers said.

The purpose of the academy is to prepare provosts and vice presidents to serve as effective college presidents. Since the program began in the 2009–2010 academic year, several vice presidents have become presidents. Although Sellers is not currently seeking to become a college president, she said she is grateful for Tuskegee’s commitment to employee professional development.

“This leadership program has an excellent track record of training vice presidents to become university presidents. I look forward to participating in this executive leadership experience and successfully completing the program," Sellers said.
