TUSKEGEE, Ala. (October 13, 2009) - U.S. Rep. Artur Davis addressed Tuskegee University students and parents at the University's Annual Scholarship Convocation in the University Chapel on Sunday, Oct. 11. The address concluded Parents' Weekend, which highlighted the success of students as well as their parents' and guardians' commitment to their achievements.
Davis challenged the students to reach beyond their individual boundaries to become citizens of the world. "Learn as much as you can so you can go back to your respective communities and be change agents. You will face barriers, but sometimes you just have to knock them down," he said.
Davis was reelected in 2008 to serve his fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He represents Alabama's Seventh Congressional District, a 12-county area that spans from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa to the Black Belt and has been unopposed during his last two political contests. He recently announced his 2010 bid for governor of Alabama.
"It is always a pleasure to welcome Congressman Davis to Tuskegee University," said Dr. Benjamin F. Payton, University President. "His support of the University both as former Trustee and one who provides great counsel on a number of issues of importance to our forward movement is most appreciated."
On behalf of the University, Payton presented Davis with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree following his speech to a packed audience of students, faculty and staff, parents, and community supporters from across the country.
Students were then recognized for academic achievement, including the Honor Roll (3.25), Eminent Scholars (4.0) and University Scholars (college based, 3.25 min.). Honor societies were also recognized, in which an unprecedented number of students are active participants based on their academic achievement.
