Tavis Smiley announced as Homecoming/Charter Day Convocation speaker

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (October 20, 2009) - Tuskegee University President, Dr. Benjamin F. Payton, has announced critically acclaimed author, speaker and television personality Tavis Smiley as the 2009 Homecoming/Charter Day Convocation speaker. Smiley will address students and alumni Sunday, Nov. 8, at 9:30 a.m. in the University Chapel.

"We are delighted to have Mr. Smiley speak to the Tuskegee University family," Payton said. "His unapologetic and intelligent views on both national and international issues are sure to further enlighten all in attendance."

One of America's most celebrated and respected media personalities, Smiley hosts a half-hour nightly talk show on PBS, "Tavis Smiley," which reaches 92 percent of America's households and is seen in 187 countries. His annual symposium, "State of the Black Union," featuring America's premier thought leaders, engages thousands of attendees and over 100 million viewers worldwide.

Also of great importance at the Convocation, alumni classes will present the University with donations to benefit the institution and its students.  This year, the following classes are celebrating their respective reunions: 1974, 1979, 1984, 1994, 1999 and 2004. The Class of 1984 will be celebrating their 25th reunion.
