Program Objectives

Curriculum Objectives

The purposes of the baccalaureate program in nursing are to provide:  educational preparation for the practice of professional nursing in a variety of settings; and a basis for graduate study and lifelong learning.

To achieve program purposes, the graduate will meet the following terminal program outcomes:

  • 1. Synthesize facts, principles and concepts from the social sciences, natural sciences, humanities, information technology and nursing to make critical decisions in the practice of professional nursing
  • 2. Demonstrate safe performance of basic psychomotor skills and appropriate technology in providing nursing care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the lifespan.
  • 3. Utilize essential nursing competencies, critical thinking, therapeutic communication, and appropriate technology to make independent and/or collaborative nursing decisions in the practice of professional nursing to of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the life span.
  • 4. Utilize principles of health promotion, disease prevention, and illness and disease management for individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.
  • 5. Collaborate with members of multidisciplinary health care teams in meeting the needs of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the life span.
  • 6. Utilize theories and principles of nursing, leadership and management in the practice of professional nursing in a variety of settings.
  • 7. Promote evidence-based practice of professional nursing through interpretation, utilization and participation in research.
  • 8. Accept responsibility and accountability for life long, self-directed learning and personal and professional growth in nursing practice.
  • 9. Evaluate the impact of cultural, spiritual, ethical, legal, political and technological advancement in the practice of professional nursing.

Leveled Curriculum Outcomes  

  • 1. Synthesize facts, principles and concepts from the social sciences, natural sciences humanities, information technology and nursing to make critical decisions in the practice of  professional nursing.           

            Level I            Incorporate facts, principles and concepts from the social sciences, natural sciences and humanities to make decisions in the practice of professional nursing.

            Level II            Apply facts, principles, and concepts from the social sciences, natural sciences, humanities, and nursing to make critical judgments/decisions in the practice of professional nursing.

2.   Demonstrate safe performance of basic psychomotor skills and appropriate technology in providing nursing care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations   across   the lifespan.

             Level I            Select appropriate psychomotor skills for providing evidence-based nursing interventions based on current standards of nursing practice.

            Level II            Integrate the use of health care technology, evidence based nursing interventions, and psychomotor skills in providing nursing care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the lifespan.

3.   Integrate essential nursing competencies, critical thinking, therapeutic communication, and appropriate technology to make independent and/or collaborative nursing decisions in the      practice of professional nursing to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the life span.

            Level I           Apply essential nursing competencies, critical thinking, therapeutic communication, and appropriate technology to make nursing decisions in the practice of professional nursing to individuals, families, groups and communities across the life span at a beginning level.

            Level II           Apply essential nursing competencies, critical thinking, therapeutic communication, and appropriate technology to make independent and/or collaborative nursing decisions in the practice of professional nursing to individuals, families, groups and communities across the life span at an advanced level.

4.   Utilize principles of health promotion, disease prevention, and illness and disease management for individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.           

            Level I            Select appropriate teaching-learning strategies to promote health, prevent disease, reduce risk, or manage illness and disease for individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.          

            Level II            Demonstrate the use of appropriate teaching-learning strategies to promote health, prevent disease, reduce risk, or manage illness and disease for individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.

5.   Collaborate with members of multidisciplinary health care teams in meeting the needs of  individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the life span.

             Level I            Discuss the roles of various disciplines that are utilized to meet the healthcare  needs of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the life span.          

            Level II            Interact with members of multidisciplinary health care teams in meeting the needs of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the life span.

6.   Utilize theories and principles of nursing, leadership, and management in the practice of professional nursing in a variety of settings.           

            Level I              Demonstrate the use of time management and organizations skills in the practice of professional nursing in a variety of settings at a beginning level.           

            Level II            Demonstrate the use of nursing, leadership, and management by the provision of safe, efficient nursing care in a variety of settings and participation in organizations that promote advancement of the nursing profession. 

7.   Promote evidence-based practice of professional nursing through interpretation, utilization and participation in research.           

            Level I             Demonstrate the ability to use informatics/technology and appropriate data bases to access health care information.

            Level II            Critique evidence-based articles to support decision -making when providing care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations..

8.   Accept responsibility and accountability for life long, self-directed learning and personal and professional growth in nursing practice.

            Level I          Identify the importance of lifelong learning and the advancement of the profession of nursing through educational, community, and organizational activities.

            Level II          Demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning and the advancement of the profession of nursing through educational, community, and organizational activities.

9.   Evaluate the impact of cultural, spiritual, ethical, legal, political and technological advancement in the practice of professional nursing.       

             Level I             Incorporate concepts of spirituality, culture, ethics, technology, politics, and law into the nursing process in providing nursing care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the lifespan.

              Level II            Provide culturally competent professional nursing practice that is responsive to spiritual, cultural, ethical, technological, political, and legal issues that occurs as a result of increasing diversity and environmental complexity.
