Aerospace/Psychology Collaboration
The emphasis of this NSF HBCU-UP grant is not only enhancing undergraduate education in the STEM disciplines, but also encouraging interdisciplinary education and research experiences for undergraduates.
The Aerospace/Psychology team is concentrating on all three aspects. The unifying vehicle chosen for this purpose is the establishment of a Low Cost Flight Simulation Environment (FSE). Specific learning modules are being developed in the courses Aircraft Stability & Control and Aircraft Design for using the FSE as a virtual flight test engineering facility. A course in aircraft flight controls will be developed which will have a laboratory component based on MATLAB interfaced with the FSE to provide a test bed for study of the control laws. A course in Human Factors Psychology will be developed aimed at Engineering and Psychology majors. A strong laboratory component will be part of the course which will make use of the FSE for studying human factors issues. Students in Psychology and Aerospace Engineering will be provided interdisciplinary research experiences in the area of human factors in Aviation in conjunction with research being conducted by the Aerospace/Psychology faculty team.
