THE COACHES                                                                                                                                                                 
THE TUSKEGEE COACH:  Willie Slater, who guided Tuskegee to the SIAC championship in 2006, is a 1979 graduate of the University of West Alabama (Livingston).  He is in his second season as head coach at Tuskegee.  The Coffeeville, Ala., native, has 29 years of coaching experience, including 27 years at the collegiate level.  Seventeen were as an offensive coordinator at Troy University, the University of West Alabama, the University of North Alabama, Jacksonville State University and Temple University.  Slater was a prep All-America quarterback at Coffeeville High School and a four-year starter at the same position at the University of West Alabama.  Slater has a career record of 13-2 and a Tuskegee record of 13-2.  In 2007, he is 3-0 overall, 3-0 in the SIAC, 1-0 at home, 2-0 on the road, 0-0 at neutral sites, 0-0 in non-conference play, 3-0 when leading at halftime and 0-0 when trailing at the half.

LAST YEAR
This is the first meeting between the two teams.  Tuskegee, 2006 Co-SIAC Champions, completed the season at 10-2, 6-1 in the SIAC.  Concordia-Selma finished the 2006 season at 2-8.

LAST WEEK
Jacary Atkinson, twice SIAC Offensive Player of the Week in 2007, threw for 156 yards and three touchdowns as nationally ranked Tuskegee beat Fort Valley State 34-3 at Abbott Stadium.  The Golden Tigers (3-0, 3-0 SIAC) took a 20-3 lead into halftime on a 57-yard touchdown pass from Atkinson to Jason English in the first quarter.  In the second, John Pascley scored on a 6-yard run and Atkinson connected with Stanley Reid for a 24-yard touchdown.  Jake Grubbs added a 31-yard field goal for Fort Valley State.  Neither teams scored in the third.  Tuskegee put two more touchdowns on the scoreboard in the fourth on a scoring strike from Atkinson to Sean Bailey and an 85-yard interception return by Frank Williams, the second longest in recorded Tuskegee football history.  Stephen Freeman led the Golden Tigers with 93 yards on six carries.  Pascley added 78 yards and one touchdown on the ground.  English led all receivers with four receptions for 93 yards and one touchdown, his fifth of the season.  Garrett Williams ran for 47 yards on eight attempts for Fort Valley State (3-2, 2-1 SIAC).  The Tuskegee defense recorded four interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

NEXT WEEK
The nationally ranked Golden Tigers will face the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College at 2:00 p.m. ET, in the 72nd Annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic at McClung Stadium, Columbus, Ga.  The Hornets of Concordia College-Selma will take the week off and prepare for a visit from Webber International on Oct. 13.

The ten head football coaches picked Tuskegee to finish second in the 2007 SIAC race.

The 2007 Tuskegee football team members hail from 17 states and the District of Columbia (Alabama- 41; Georgia-32; Florida-4; Texas and Louisiana-3 each; Illinois, Missouri; California and North Carolina-2 each;  Mississippi, South Carolina, Washington, New Jersey, West Virginia, Indiana, Michigan, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia-1 each).

Eight Golden Tigers were named to the 2007 All-SIAC Pre-season Football Team, one on the first team and seven on the second team: FIRST TEAM OFFENSE:  #61 Anthony Driver (OL); SECOND TEAM OFFENSE:  #3 Richard Fitzhugh (RB); #9 Lorenzo Crawford (WR); #69 Larry Peoples (OL); #66 Kevin Jones (OL); SECOND TEAM DEFENSE:  #55 Jonathan Hall (LB); #46 Clifton Sanders (LB); #12 Terrance Stringer (DB); Jarod Simpson (DB).

The ‘07 football season marks the 114th consecutive year Tuskegee has fielded a football team.
