2008 September Symposium

2008 September Symposium

The 2008 September Symposium was the fourth annual to highlight the research accomplishments of Tuskegee University's own STEM majors.  This year the event was on September 17th from 12-3pm at the Kellogg Conference Center with the presence of more than 60 guests.  There were 28 outstanding students whose work was highlighted at the event.  This was a 48% increase from last years participation.  The symposium included a keynote speaker, the new addition to the Animal Science Department, Dr. Jacqueline Jackson, a poster session of attractive posters showcasing the student's research, a graduate school recruitment phase, and a buffet of hors d' oeuvres and punch for the guest to take pleasure in.

The graduate school segment featured representatives from Auburn University, Colorado State University, MIT, Tuskegee University's Material Science and Engineering and Integrative Biosciences PhD Programs, Tulane University, University of Alabama, and University of Alabama at Huntsville.

The posters were judged and at the conclusion of the symposium the winners were announced.  The first place winner was Adrian Grant, second place was awarded to Raphael Malbrue, and third place was received by Shaina Attoh.  All the participants received a certificate of participation and a university token donated by the National Center for Bioethics.  A list of the posters presented follows.

Sharee Small, DUR, said "This year's event was great!  I was so excited about the graduate school recruiters being able to attend and the response they had to the event.  They enjoyed it the event to the extent that they have asked to be a part of the event next year.  This is not to give any less credit or excitement to the number of students and the mentors we had to participate as their continual support and participation makes the event a huge success every year. I am really proud of all the students and their advisors for putting forth the hard work and exerting the energy to participate in this event to make it a success.  It was well worth the effort we put into making it happen after seeing the students so excited to talk about their research and seeing the recruiters so eager to learn more about the student's projects.  They were impressed with the quality of work the students exhibited as well as the initiative of so many students to be involved in reaserch so early in their careers.  I thought I was excited last year to plan for the 2008 event, now with the success of the graduate school addition, I can't wait to see the expansion for next years event as I already have some early planning strategies in mind.  I want to continue to reward the students for all of their efforts in being young researchers in every way possible and they are enjoying this event more and more."
