The National Bioethics Center was developed as a partial response to the apology of President William J. Clinton for the United States Public Health Service Study on Syphilis conducted at Tuskegee, in Macon County, Alabama from 1932 to 1972. ...More 
Syphilis Study Legacy Committee
In February of 1994 at the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library in Charlottesville, VA, a symposium was held entitled "Doing Bad in the Name of Good?: The Tuskegee Syphilis Study and Its Legacy." Resulting from this gathering was the creation of the Syphilis Study Legacy Committee which met for the first time on January 18-19, 1996.

Legacy Committee Final Report
In its final report, the Committee urged President Clinton to apologize for the wrongs of the USPHS Syphilis Study. The Committee's efforts produced results on May 16, 1997 when the President apologized on behalf of the United States government to the surviving participants of the study. These men and members of the Legacy Committee were invited to the White House to witness the apology. ...More
