Position:  Financial Aid Counselor

Location:  Student Financial Services/Financial Aid


Essential Duties

·        Calculate student budgets, review need analysis and determine student eligibility for federal financial aid

  • Process loans for Federal Family Education Loan Programs
  • Act as a liaison with lenders, guarantors, Department of Education, and students
  • Stay abreast of regulations governing all Title IV Programs to ensure compliance with prescribed policies
  • Counsel students and parents regarding financial aid programs
  • Initiate and complete research reports, and studies on Financial Aid operations
  • Analyze and interpret the changes that occur in Federal regulations affecting financial aid
  • Assist the Director of Financial Aid in packaging awards for students
  • Estimate the number of freshmen to be awarded financial aid
  • Assign funds to support returning students
  • Advise students of administrative and policy changes
  • Maintain roster of ineligible students to prevent awarding aid illegally
  • Inspect and/or validate each student’s folder for accuracy and completeness
  • Assist in preparation of annual reports (Fiscal Operational Report and others)
  • Work in conjunction with Data Processing Center in obtaining vital information about students (earning records, enrollment records and others)
  • Lecture interested groups about financial aid
  • Distribute financial aid forms and other vital material


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related area (2 years preferred)
  • At least two years of related work experience in a college or university in financial aid
  • Provide excellent customer service in a courteous manner                           
  • Ability to implement financial aid activities in conformity with Federal and State regulations within University policies and procedures
  • Ability to interact effectively with University personnel, students and parents
  • Knowledge of Microsoft computer applications including WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be a team player
