Position: Pathology Associate Technician
Location: CVMNAH/Pathobiology
(This is a part-time position)
This position is located in the Veterinary Diagnostic Services Unit within the Department of Pathobiology. This position directly supports the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and biomedical research efforts of the College and the University. Primary responsibilities are to assist in the diagnostic functions of anatomic and clinical pathology. The anatomic pathology responsibilities include necropsy, tissue trimming and processing for light and electron microscopic evaluation. Clinical pathology responsibilities involve performing the laboratory assays requested of that laboratory.
Essential Duties
- Under direct supervision by a faculty pathologist, perform necropsies and record gross and microscopic findings and report the results from specimens submitted to the necropsy laboratory
- Assist in the training of professional DVM students during their clinical rotations as directed by the supervisor
- Participate in the emergency call back functions of the VDSL
- Under direct supervision by a faculty pathologist, perform gross and microscopic evaluations on biopsy specimen submitted to the VDSL and report the findings
- Operate automated analyzers, other equipment and perform other required functions (including maintenance and calibrations) in the VDSL clinical pathology laboratory
- Record keeping and filing of all reports on the VDSL server
Qualifications
- DVM Degree required; formal post-DVM training preferred
- Proven ability to operate in the biomedical sciences as a technical assistant in a diagnostic laboratory setting, preferred
- Technical skills and record keeping related to bio-instrumentation required
- Previous training experience with student populations, preferred
- Experience in necropsy technique and histological tissue preparations, preferred
- Previous experience working with pathologists, clinical pathologists, clinicians and biomedical scientists as well as graduate and professional students, preferred
Other Responsibilities
- Must assist in the training of professional students in the DVM program
- Must be willing to receive on-the-job training necessary to become proficient in any and all procedures required for operation of the various diagnostic laboratories
- Must participate in emergency coverage within the Veterinary Diagnostic Services Laboratories (VDSL)
- Must be a team player, and provide excellent customer service
- Participates in emergency coverage, and works the after hour emergency call back during the week, on weekends and during holidays
