Position:                     Residence Hall Director/Counselor II

Location:                    Student Services/Residence Hall    



Essential Duties

  • Provide leadership for overall management of the residence hall and its programs
  • Assist with orientation of students to campus life, and make referrals of students
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date file on student affairs, referral agencies, academic regulations and  procedures of Tuskegee University
  • Creatively handle problem situations and take necessary action
  • Maintain a positive interpersonal climate in the hall
  • Schedule and supervise staff for coverage; i.e., Resident Assistants
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and keep informed about campus activities
  • Prepare and submit reports to the Director of Residence Life and Development as required
  • Participate in assigning rooms and issuing keys to residents
  • Report all maintenance, cleaning or repair problems in the hall
  • Supervise hall officers, student assistants and the residents in the promotion of living/community resource persons and the development of enrichment programs
  • Advise and assist the resident hall government
  • Attend residence hall and campus functions; encourage students to do so likewise
  • Attend in-service and special training sessions
  • Maintain and account for hall property; including ascertaining property inventory upon room assignments and vacancies
  • Conduct regular room inspections of all occupants
  • Monitor and supervise all hall floor activities
  • Perform referrals of student counseling clients for additional professional service, as appropriate
  • Conduct group counseling sessions in the residence hall environment, as required
  • Perform counseling services in the area of personal/social, career/advisement and academic/advisement, as required by student clients
  • Provide excellent customer service in a courteous manner
  • Must be a team player


  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • At least three (3) years experience in Residence Life preferred
  • Candidate must have proven ability to grasp instructions readily, show superior initiative, use good judgment, and promote cooperation and goodwill on the job
  • Previous experience working with programs involving students, adults, or children


May have on-call duty responsibility during nights and weekends
