Col. William R. Saunders
At the October luncheon, ASMC members had the auspicious pleasure of hearing from our very own Inspector General, Colonel William R. Saunders. As the IG of WR-ALC, Col. Saunders is responsible for overseeing and providing responsive, independent assessments of wartime readiness, critical compliance areas, complaints and inquiries, and fraud, waste, and abuse programs. Before addressing an audience of financial managers, Col. Saunders certainly did his homework about our organization and started his speech by giving us an impressive overview of what ASMC represents. Then he skillfully tied in our organizational goals with his topic of strategic professional development and partnering with the internal and external customers to drive home the importance of us working together as a team for the betterment of Robins AFB. Col. Saunders emphasized how we should focus on professional development (continuous education) because "if you’re not improving your position, you are selling yourself short."
In his energetic appeal to the audience, Col. Saunders stressed his motto, "everyone has a right to talk to the IG." And as the facilitator, he will listen, understand, frame the allegation, and even provide a little counseling. Col. Saunders emphatically stated that he and his staff work for the truth. Then surprisingly, imitating the memorable scene between Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, he shouted to an unsuspecting and somewhat stunned member, "and sometimes YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!"
Although Col. Saunders is only a phone call away, he urged people to visit the IG website https://wwwmil.robins.af.mil/IG/ which will often times provide the answers to many frequently asked questions. To illustrate, the website has a wealth of information on the complaints process including who, what, when, and how to file, and even offers the referral agencies and appropriate grievance channels. In addition to Col. Saunders, three other inspector generals representing the AFRC, the 116th ACW, and the 5th Combat Communications Group, are also present at Robins AFB.
In closing, Col. Saunders stated "until there is awareness, there is no consensus for change." ASMC members want to thank Col. Saunders again for making us aware of the responsibilities and services of the base IG and for giving us, his internal customers, an opportunity to partner with the IG team.
