About the Cooperative Extension Program

Formally beginning with the appointment in 1906 of Thomas Monroe Campbell as the first extension agent in the United States, the Tuskegee University Cooperative Extension Program (TUCEP) maintains a rich tradition of serving limited resource and underserved audiences.  Although outreach work is carried on throughout the state, TUCEP’s primary target areas are clientele in the Black Belt region in the State and the Cherokee Tribe of Northeast Alabama (CTNEAL).

The focus of outreach and educational services consists of six program areas as follows: (1) Alabama Youth Entrepreneurial Initiative and Workforce Development, (2) Small Scale Farming and Global Food Security, (3) Enhancing Citizens’ Capacity to Transform Communities, (4) Integrated Natural Resources, Sustainable Energy, and Climate Change, (5) Nutrition, Fitness and Childhood Obesity, and (6) Healthy Lifestyles, Prevention, and Food Safety.

County Agents and State Specialists contribute most of their time towards meeting specific needs of the people in the communities they serve through our Extension Team Projects and other outreach initiatives.  These unique services are delivered by conducting a series of in-service training activities, small group meetings, educational workshops, camps, and site demonstrations that use curriculum-based information.  A number of conferences such as the Farmers Conference, the Booker T. Washington Economic Development Summit, and the Youth Empowerment Summit are also held every year to support these educational programs.
