Historical Background   
           
    The Brimmer College of Business and Information Science is a direct outgrowth of Tuskegee University’s emphasis on economic empowerment and business development.  From its inception, Tuskegee has been a highly recognized and visible institution committed to the values of self-help, business development and lifelong learning.  The University’s founder, Dr. Booker T. Washington, was a strong advocate of entrepreneurship and business development through the forging of strategic partnerships that linked academic programs with the broader commerce of the world.  Highly touted as the “Tuskegee Model,” the acquisition of land, the development of marketable management and entrepreneurial skills and the formation of capital to create and sustain viable businesses, have served as the foundation for producing highly skilled business leaders.  In 1900, Dr. Washington started the Negro Business League, which laid the foundation for business education at Tuskegee and for African Americans.  

    Dr. Washington’s vision finds contemporary expression in the ongoing evolution of the College of Business and Information Science.  With nearly 460 students and faculty, the College is now a career-oriented unit that provides its students with the technical, professional and leadership skills needed for entry and advancement in an increasingly competitive and technology-driven global marketplace.  While the institution began offering a program in management education in 1925, the program was phased out in the 1940s because the business, political, and societal climate of the country at that time did not provide employment opportunities for African American Managers.  The current business program dates back to the early 1960s, when the University administration concluded that coming years would bring increasing opportunities for African Americans trained for managerial and professional positions in business and industry.  Thus, a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration was started in 1962 as part of the social science division of the School of Arts and Sciences.  In 1971, the program was elevated to department status in the School of Applied Sciences.  By the early 1970s the department started offering a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Management science, finance, and marketing were added by the end of the decade.  In 1983 the department was elevated to school status with the addition of the department of economics.  In 1997, Hospitality Management was added.  In 2000, the Department of Computer Science, formerly housed in the College of Engineering and Architecture, was moved to the College of Business and Information Science.
        
    The business unit of the College received initial accreditation by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business in 1998.  The Department of Computer Science is seeking accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the recognized accrediting body for college and university programs in applied sciences, computing, engineering and technology. The current organizational structure of the Brimmer College of Business and Information Science includes three academic departments, Management, Accounting, Finance and Economics, and Computer Science.   Nine majors are offered toward the Bachelor of Science Degree—Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Supply Chain Management, Sales and marketing, Hospitality management, Computer Science, and Information Technology.
    
    With a development cost of $14.5 million the new Andrew F. Brimmer Hall, named in honor of the retired Chairman of the Tuskegee University Board of Trustees, an economist and the first African American to serve on the Federal Reserve Board, houses the Brimmer College of Business and Information Science, and represents one of the University’s Signature buildings.  Completed in 2007,  the four story, approximately 45,000 square feet facility has almost tripled the available space for classrooms, laboratories, offices and lounges.  It is outfitted with the latest in technological advances including “smart” classrooms and state-of-the-art laboratories and space to conduct research.

    We strive to be recognized as one of the nation’s leading business and computer science programs.  We want to become the college of choice for the best and brightest students the region and the nation have to offer.  We will attract qualified, committed, research-oriented faculty who will prepare students to live and work in a global world.

Mission

    The Brimmer College of Business and Information Science provides its students a challenging opportunity for a liberal, technical, and professional education.  Graduates of the College of Business and Information Science are expected to be well-informed and responsible individuals capable of succeeding in both private and public sectors in a global and diverse society, and possessing a desire to engage in lifelong learning.

   Specifics of the mission include:

   Instruction

        To produce faculty and graduates. . .

            with a broad education in the arts, sciences, and humanities

            with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the business world and  its technological advances

            with sufficient knowledge and technical skills in a field of specialization to obtain a position in business, industry, government and/or graduate school

            who can think creatively and critically and play leadership roles in a globally changing technological society

Core Values

    We believe in the Brimmer College of Business and Information Science as a community which fosters among its members:

     1.  High ethical standards.  We value honesty, integrity and dignity in our interactions with colleagues and students and seek to act in accord with the highest standards of professionalism at all times.

     2.  Continued intellectual growth of our students.  Intellectual and moral attributes of curiosity and creativity; objectivity, openness and rigor in scholarly inquiry; integrity and truthfulness; and excellence of mind and personal character; love of knowledge and of learning.

     3.  Community engagement.  In accordance with our heritage as a member of the land-grant community, we recognize and appreciate the contributions that the community makes to the College in the form of students, resources and opportunities for business and personal growth.  We seek to explore opportunities to disseminate knowledge to people in this community and to give advice related to business endeavors.

     4.  Research and scholarship.  As faculty, we seek to expand the knowledge in our disciplines by conducting relevant and valid research and to disseminate this knowledge through teaching, intellectual contributions and service activities.

    5.  Innovative and continuous improvement in all areas of CBIS’ offerings.  We seek opportunities to update and improve our current educational programs and to develop new and innovative programs in areas of high demand.

    6.  We embrace, celebrate and value diversity, inclusion and cooperation. We respect the rights, culture and dignity of all people as contributing members of the team by utilizing multiple perspectives and talents.

    7.  Sustainability as a tool to increase corporate social responsibility and long term stakeholder value.  We strive to balance economic, societal, and environmental needs with sustainable practices


Key  Strategic Directions

     1.    The Brimmer College of Business and Information Science will strengthen the rigor and relevance of the educational preparation of undergraduates for life and work in a global society, and achieve competitive distinction among comparable business schools in the region and the nation as measured by increased placement rates upon graduation.

     2.    The College will increase its offerings to include at least one additional undergraduate degree program and one graduate degree program that will have a special niche and one that would possibly create a bridge between business and information science.

     3.    Working with the Office of Admissions, the College will continue to recruit and retain high quality students who are able to compete successfully in the workplace and/or in graduate and professional school.

     4.     The College will sustain alliances and relationship building initiatives to foster best practices, stay current with industry changes, and provide consultative small business assistance.

     5.    The College will aggressively seek opportunities for faculty development and retooling to update technology and teaching methodology skills and increase research opportunities that will add significant knowledge in the profession for both faculty and students.

     6.    To build global entrepreneurship initiatives, the College will seek corporate and private partnerships, exchanges, and collaborations in research, teaching, and study.

     7.    The College will establish a Center of Academic Excellence in at least one area of its departments/units.

     8.    The College will seek both private and federal funding to generate the resources necessary to carry out the directives of this plan, to be responsive to students, faculty and staff and to maintain our status as excellent fiscal agents of the resources entrusted to us.


Implementing Objectives


SD 1. The Brimmer College will:


   a.    Continually assess curriculum structure content and quality to make certain that graduates have the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the demands of the business environment, particularly in the areas of critical thinking, ethics, technology sophistication, resource management and discipline specific knowledge. 
 
   b.    Encourage faculty to stay abreast of current developments in their respective disciplines and to integrate the most up-to-date research findings into their teaching. 

   c.    Continue to explore with the Office of Career Counseling and Placement opportunities for student internships and scholarships. 

   d.    Continue to work with the advisory board to develop an endowment for the College for scholarships and an endowed chair. 

   e.    Continue to emphasize teaching excellence.

SD 2.    The Brimmer College will:


   a.    Implement the competitive curriculum toward the undergraduate degree in Information Technology. 

   b.    Periodically review and evaluate the program to determine if any changes are necessary to the structure or delivery of courses.

   c.    Brainstorm the development of a state-of-the-art graduate degree program with a competitive special niche. 

   d.    Identify and target market niches that can be developed to enhance the regional and national stature of the College.

   e.    Provide a series of graduate faculty development seminars directed toward improving teaching effectiveness at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

   f.    Evaluate existing programs to ensure continued viability and strength.

SD 3.    The Brimmer College will:


   a.  Coordinate with the Office of Admissions to identify the top hometowns of Current students as a means to focus recruiting efforts.

   b.    Review and recommend changes as needed in the requirements for entry into the graduate program.

   c.    Provide an innovative shared first-year academic experience for all undergraduates; continue to mentor students and maintain relationships with family members through a once-a-year activity.

   d.    Work with state, federal and community agencies to acquire commitments and funding to guarantee all full-time students at least one of the following opportunities:  independent or faculty-directed research, an international educational experience, a community-based project, a public service or career-based internship. 

   e.    Develop a post-graduate mentorship program by partnering alumni and/or graduate students with junior and senior undergraduate students.

   f.    Provide opportunities for students to present research at open forums.  

SD 4.    The Brimmer College will:


   a.    Create greater opportunities for community engagement linked to academic coursework.

   b.    Require all units to include community engagement in their planning and annual report.

   c.    Review and revise the structure for community engagement, including consideration of a community advisory board and a single point of accountability.

   d.    Maintain and strengthen relationships with the business community. 

   e.    Continue to develop relationships with business organizations through company and alumni contacts. 

   f.    Work to enhance the College’s reputation through the publication of research presentations to community organizations and news releases of faculty accomplishments.

   g.    Enhance  the Advisory Board with additional corporate/industry officials as needed.  


SD 5.    The Brimmer College will:

    
   a.    Recruit and retain faculty that actively produce and disseminate intellectual contributions in a variety of forums.
 
   b.    Continue to provide forums for discussing research issues such as research seminar series and distinguished lecture series.

   c.    Encourage instructional development by having faculty share teaching-related information and by supporting attendance at professional seminars and conferences.

   d.    Encourage faculty to stay abreast of current developments in their respective disciplines and to integrate the most up-to-date research findings into their teaching.

   e.    Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration by the faculty in curriculum development, teaching and research. 

   f.    Support faculty efforts to provide service to their respective disciplines through participation in academic and professional organizations. 

   g.    Create opportunities for faculty to obtain additional funding to attend international conferences and international faculty development workshops.

   h.    Provide a series of graduate faculty development seminars directed toward improving teaching effectiveness.

   i.    Employ a creative college grants/contracts writer with demonstrated results.  

SD 6.    The Brimmer College will:


   a.    Expand the culture of community engagement and increase and broaden the participation of the College in entrepreneurship activities. 

   b.    Expand the curriculum to include a focus on entrepreneurship.

   c.    Expand, support and recognize those faculty members engaged in entrepreneurship initiatives.

   d.    Become a leader in the region and organize partnerships, collaborations and memoranda of understanding with other institutions in the region to support entrepreneurship and other business initiatives.
 
SD7.    The Brimmer College will:


   a.    Identify and enrich faculty expertise in the area/areas relevant to the Center of Excellence. 

   b.    Designate a coordinator/director for the Center. 

   c.    Define the structure and organizational pattern of the Center.

   d.    Identify and define the mission and objectives of the Center. 

   e.    Solicit the approval of the College to move the plan forward.

   f.    Apply to the Administration and other stakeholders for approval.

   g.    Seek internal/external funding to support the implementation of the goals and objectives of the Center.

   h.    Create, establish and implement the goals and objectives of the Center and disseminate information to stakeholders.

SD8.    The Brimmer College will:


   a.    Encourage and require, where appropriate, faculty to write both solicited and unsolicited proposals to be disseminated to various partners, organizations and agencies for potential funding. 

   b.    Obtain funds to employ internal marketing and public relations person with the requisite expertise to coordinate with the University’s marketing staff. 

   c.    Establish a College Public Relations Committee. 

   d.    Market the College and its offerings as a premier link in the educational process.

   e.    Work in conjunction with the Office of Development in developing a fundraising plan for continued resource development. 

   f.    Provide multi-media presentations, where appropriate and possible, to facilitate a greater understanding of mission applications in the college.

   g.    Work with the Marketing and Communications department in the development and design of first-class brochures and other marketing materials for the College.
