Materials Science & Engineering

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) offers programs of study leading to the Master's and PhD degrees in MSE.  The PhD Program in Materials Science and Engineering was started in 1998 with support from the National Science Foundation under the Center for Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) program.  It is the University's first doctoral program, which is designed to substantially increase the number of African American PhDs in Materials Science and Engineering.  The program is spearheaded by the Center for Advanced Materials (T-CAM), which represents the largest multidisciplinary research, education and outreach activity on Tuskegee's campus.  The program is designed to allow students with an undergraduate or a Master's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry or Physics to enroll.  A broad spectrum of areas connected with Materials Science and Engineering is available for research at the PhD level.  The success of the program within a short period of time has been phenomenal.  We have already produced twenty (21) graduates and several others on their way to complete their degree requirements.

In an effort to provide sustained support for commitment to this program, Tuskegee University (TU) established the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, effective July 1, 2011.  TU is the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to have a department of MSE.  Hence, because of this great success with the PhD program, a Master of Science degreee program was launched in January 2012.  It was developed to recruit those students who are eager to earn a graduate degree in MSE but are not sure if they are prepared to invest an additional 3-4 years in studying toward a doctorate degree.

The programs are supported through various grants including those from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Defense, (Air Force research Laboratory, Army Research Office, Office Naval research, and U.S. Army Engineer Research Development Center-Construction Engineering research Laboratory) and industry.
