Biographical Sketch:

Barbara Howard is Deputy Director of Program Operations for the Health Disparities Institute for Research and Education, and co-investigator/field coordinator of the Community Outreach Core at Tuskegee University for the Morehouse School of Medicine/Tuskegee University/University of Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Center Research Partnership.  Community Outreach is primarily a service program that educates and mobilizes the community to take action to prevent and control cancer. Ms. Howard is also involved in the Healthy Lifestyle Program, developed through the Community Outreach component.  It has helped to increase health awareness and positive action, promoting wellness and cancer prevention in the target populations of Bullock and Macon Counties in Alabama.  Her ties to the community through political and community activism, grassroots organizational skills, and international affiliations have been vital assets to Tuskegee University’s program initiatives.  In 1996, as a national board member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, she was part of an international investigative delegation to assess the health needs and effects of the U.S. embargo on the women and children of Cuba. Upon my return, she has been a sought after speaker for events at universities across the country to share our findings.  In recent years, Barbara has coordinated an annual women’s conference at Tuskegee University with (PI) Dr. Roberta Troy, which has an area of focus on women’s health.  In addition, she is a certified grant writer and reviewer for community, government, and educational proposals.
