News of Physics Students

Physics majors Mr. Jeremiah F. Wilson and Ms. Leah Sanks have been nominated to receive the prestigious White House initiated HBCU ALL STAR Students Award for the Year 2014. Mr. Wilson is a MARC U-STAR student at Tuskegee University pursuing his research on Clean Drinking Water and Air Disinfection problem based on Solar Energy and Photocatalysis. Ms. Leah Sanks, a nationally recognized and certified Physics Tutor currently working as a lead peer staff at Tuskegee Center for Academic Excellence (T-CAEIL) and also involved in research projects on Alternate Electric Vehicles funded to Physics Department by US Department of Transportation.

Physics majors Mr. Jeremiah F. Wilson and Mr. Sammie Ely III with their faculty mentors Dr. Sesha Srinivasan and Dr. P.C. Sharma have successfully filed their 2013 invention on “Universal Photocatalytic Reactor Design for the Water and Air Detoxification and Fuel Production”. This invention was approved by the Tuskegee University Intellectual Property Committee (TU-IPC) and currently filing a Non-Provisional Patent with the University’s Attorney Office.

Physics majors Mr. Jeremiah F. Wilson, Mr. Sammie Ely III, Mr. Lamont Henderson and Ms. Bria Moore with their faculty mentors Dr. Sesha Srinivasan and Dr. P.C. Sharma have got their research paper on “Hydrogen Energy Production” published in Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics (JURP). (Please visit http://www.jurp.org/) Journal Citation: JURP, Volume 27, January 28, 2014. The paper discusses primarily about efficiency calculations of producing hydrogen from electrolysis of water using PV solar cells. Authors also discussed the hydrogen storage and energy conversion in proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Physics major Mr. Jeremiah F. Wilson is the co-author of a manuscript “Nanomaterials Driven Energy, Environmental and Biomedical Research” which will be published in 2014 by The American Physical Society, Proceedings of the International Conference on Nanomaterials, 2013, Western University, Canada. Other authors of this paper are Drs. P.C. Sharma and Sesha Srinivasan.

Physics majors Mr. Jeremiah F. Wilson and Mr. Sammie Ely III, are the co-authors of the research journal paper submission to “Soils and Sediments Contamination – An International Journal” which is currently under review for publications. Other authors of this research paper are Drs. Sesha Srinivasan and P.C. Sharma. The paper is entitled to “Physico-chemical Characterization of Soils and Sediments Collected from the Gulf of Mexico” which was earlier carried out with the funding support of Dauphin Island Sea Lab and British Petroleum.

Physics major students have been invited to contribute an undergraduate research article entitled “Solving the Clean Water Problem”, which will be publiced in SPS Observer, (In Print 2014). The authors of this paper are by Jeremiah F. Wilson, Sammie Ely III, Bria M. Moore, and Lamont Henderson; Faculty Mentors: Sesha Srinivasan, P.C. Sharma,

Three posters were presented at the Joint Annual Research Symposium (JARS 2014), Tuskegee University. The faculty mentors involved in these presentations is Dr. Sesha Srinivasan and Dr. P.C. Sharma. The list of presented and their title of project are given below:

Ms. Leah M. Sanks – Alternative Electric Vehicles; Co-authored by Sesha Srinivasan, P.C. Sharma and David Block.
Mr. Jeremiah F. Wilson – Development of TiO2-Xwt% InVO4 photocatalytic nanocomposites for ambient light assisted water detoxification; Co-authored with Sesha Srinivasan and P.C. Sharma.
Mr. Bertrand Isidore – TiO2 photocatalytic reduction for the electro-fuel production; Co-authored with Jeremiah F. Wilson, Dr. P.C. Sharma and Sesha Srinivasan.

Tuskegee University local chapter of Society for Physics Students, (six students member team) have been awarded with an undergraduate research award of $2,000 for the competitive propsosal entitled "High Throughput Combinatorial Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Nanoscale Hydrides" by The American Institute of Physics (AIP-∑Π∑-SPS) for the one calendar year (Jan. 01, 2014 – Dec. 31, 2014). Faculty Mentors (advisors) of this undergraduate research project: Dr. P.C. Sharma and Dr. Sesha Srinivasan. List of SPS TU Chapter Research Award Winners (Physics Majors): Timothy T. Tuskegee University local chapter of Society for Physics Students, (eight students member team) have been awarded with Marsh W. White Award ($300 cash prize) for an outreach education proposal on "Renewable Energy Technologies" by The American Institute of Physics (AIP-∑Π∑-SPS) for the one calendar year (Jan. 01, 2014 – Dec. 31, 2014). Faculty advisors of this proposal: Dr. P.C. Sharma, Dr. Sesha Srinivasan, Dr. Akshaya Kumar. Marsh M. White award cash prize will be used by the SPS TU Chapter to introduce Renewable Energy Demonstration projects to the Tuskegee Public School systems. Physics major Mr. Lamont Henderson, has presented his research poster entitled “Bandgap engineered zinc iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications” at the Nano-Bio Summit 2013 hosted by Alabama State University, Montgomery, AL. ;Other co-authors of this presentation are Mr. Jeremiah Wilson (Physics Major and MARC Scholar), Ms. Bria Moore (TU Physics Alumni and current graduate student at Duke University); faculty mentors Dr. Sesha Srinivasan and Dr. P.C. Sharma.

Physics major Ms. Amber Kinnebrew, graduated in Summer 2013 is currently opted her graduate studies in Chemistry from Tuskegee University. Ms. Kinnebrew will be pursuing her Masters degree in Chemistry from Fall 2013. 

Physics major Ms. Bria M. Moore, graduated in Spring 2013 from Tuskegee University has chosen Duke University for her graduate studies. From Fall 2013, Ms. Moore has started the Duke University’s PhD program in Medical Physics with major concentration in Diagnostic Imaging. 

Physics and Electrical Engineering double major Mr. David Mohammad, graduated in Spring 2013, has been accepted by the Master program in Systems Engineering (NavSea program) from Electrical Engineering department at Tuskegee University. 

Physics majors Jeremiah F. Wilson, Sammie Ely III, Bria M. Moore, Lamont Henderson won an undergraduate research grant of $2000 in January, 2013, from The American Institute of Physics for their research proposal entitled “Design and development of novel nanocomposite materials and reactor systems for photocatalysis”.  Faculty Mentors Dr. P.C. Sharma and Dr. Sesha Srinivasan.

Physics majors Alejandra Sandoval, Jeremiah F. Wilson, Bria M. Moore and Lamont Henderson received an undergraduate research grant of $ 1,000 in March 21, 2013 from Alabama Academy of Science for their research proposal on Laser studies and photocatalysis. Faculty Mentors: Dr. Akshaya Kumar, Dr. Sesha Srinivasan Dr. P.C. Sharma.

Physics major Alejandra Sandoval won a FIRST PRIZE IN ORAL PRESENTATION CONTEST  at the 90th Annual Meeting of Alabama Academy of Science at Samford University, Birmingham on March 21, 2013.
