This laboratory is operated by one Technician and is currently supervised by a Faculty Microbiologist. This service laboratory is capable of performing routine isolation and identification of bacterial and fungal organisms as well as performing antibiotic sensitivity tests. External laboratories are sometimes utilized to supplement this service. A faculty immunologist supervises the immunology component of the laboratory. While originally created to support the Department of Clinical Sciences with immuno-diagnostic testing, the laboratory has been expanded to perform regional testing of animals for interstate shipping. It was recently re-certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) testing. It also has the capability to perform a limited number of routine serological tests, and more sophisticated polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nucleic acid probe methodologies.
