Summer Leadership Academy 2011
On Friday, July 15, 2011 the Tuskegee University Continuing Education Program successfully commenced the 4th Annual Summer Leadership Academy. A program developed by Dr. Henry J. Findlay, Director of Continuing Education Program, to give high school students an opportunity to learn firsthand about the importance of being involved in their community, learning about various components of history and acquiring attributes to make them effective leaders for the future. The students were elated as they learned through interactive presentations from Meteorologist Micah Harris of CBS 8, Mr. Larry Warren of RBC Bank, Ms. Felecia Tyus of the Summit Management Group, Mr. Clay Redden of the Alabama State House, and Ms. Kim Ortiz of the Cooperative Extension Program. Activities of the week included historic tours of the home of Booker T. Washington and Moton Air Field (Tuskegee, AL), mock-voting on the floor of the Alabama State House, a tour the Civil Rights Memorial Center (Montgomery, AL), and even provide solutions to real-life community problems in team-building exercises.
The 2011 program was spear-headed by Mr. Timothy E. Lewis of the Continuing Education Program, with the assistance of Ms. Shari Stoudemire, Program Coordinator of Continuing Education. The academy received participants from four counties in Alabama (Bullock, Barber, Macon, and Montgomery). The program’s closing ceremony was held in the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center where students gave presentations before their peers, parents/guardians, and other guest on their experiences throughout the week. At the closing ceremony the program was deemed by Dr. Findlay as the “most successful” of all past academy’s put on by the department.
