History of Upward Bound

History of Tuskegee University Upward Bound ...

In 1968, the Tuskegee University Upward Bound program began serving high school students from Booker T. Washington High, Notasulga High, Russell County High, and Loachapoka High schools.

The program was designed to enhance participants with the academic skills and motivation necessary for education beyond secondary school.

The specified services offered are basic skills in the areas of Composition and Literature, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Science, Reading, Technology and Health and Physical Education. These courses are structured to enhance the students’ present skills and to assure that some degree of success is obtained as preparation is made to enter postsecondary institutions.

Upward Bound participants attend classes daily during the six-week summer session and 20 Saturday sessions in an academic year. Instructors include professionals from Tuskegee University, target schools and other individuals who have expertise that will enhance the program.

Students are also provided tutorial services, counseling and guidance in those areas most essential to their development. All students are provided assistance with college admission, study skills,  financial aid, ACT, SAT and the Alabama High School Exit Exam.
