The two-day event, held at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center, included several aspects including a research presentation competition for Alabama college students and hands-on science projects for middle school children. On Saturday morning, local lawmakers and a renowned inventor spoke to the participants about the importance of coming to events like the open house and getting a head start on learning more about science and technology. During their greetings, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, and alumna and Alabama House Rep. Pebblin Warren, urged the young people in attendance to dream big and to use their knowledge to defy any boundaries.  This year, Lonnie G. Johnson, alumnus and inventor of the Super Soaker water gun and several Nerf toy products, wowed the crowd by showing how far the basic principles of science and math can go.
