Genomics and Biotechnology Workshop

“Training the Next Generation of Plant Geneticists and Biotechnologists”

The Tuskegee University Genomics & Biotechnology Workshop targets Grade High school teachers and Students, introduces them to basic concepts and advanced technologies in plant genomics and biotechnology. Selected teachers will participate in a hands-on, interactive 6-day residential workshop at the TU campus May 29 - June 2, 2017. This workshop will be hosted at Tuskegee University by the College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences and the Tuskegee University Department of Environmental, Natural Resource and Plant Sciences, in collaboration with Iowa State University and supported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The Tuskegee University Genomics & Biotechnology Workshop is a program designed to provide background and active, hands-on research experiences in the design, methodology and analysis of research associated with molecular biotechnology and genomics as applied to agriculture. Teachers will be equipped with fundamental knowledge and basic laboratory skills necessary to teach plant genomics and biotechnology in the classroom. Both teachers and students will prepare and perform basic laboratory protocols in biotechnology, as applied to agricultural sciences. Students will also learn about educational and research opportunities that may lead to careers in biotechnology and genomics.

This workshop will provide teachers and students with fundamental training and resources, while at the same time igniting a passion for biotechnology and genomics, necessary to solve global challenges in crop/plant production, crop/plant disease, food security, food safety and other relevant issues of the 21st century. TUGBW Teacher Scholars will be selected based upon statement of interest, letter(s) of support and overall strength of application. The deadline for Applications is March 31, 2017.
