On October 25, 2012, forty-eight 6th-8th grade teachers from twenty-one
Black Belt schools gathered at the Tuskegee University Kellogg
Conference Center for what proved to be the transformation of science
instruction. For the meeting, faculty members from Alabama State
University, Auburn University, Tuskegee University, and University of
Alabama at Tuscaloosa spent countless hours in preparing inquiry-based
science modules to present to the teachers. The one-day workshop
consisted of six module presentations, two per grade level. It was an
amazing sight to see teachers enthusiastically mount their student caps
to participate in a diagnostic test and engage in the science
experiments. In addition, SECME shared the benefits and process of
being a SECME school. The workshop concluded with an opportunity for
participants to provide useful feedback for future MSP workshops.
