European Journal of Higher Education reviews book featuring university

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (September 17, 2013) — Tuskegee University is featured in a book that has been given high praise in a review by the European Journal of Higher Education. The book "Reimagining democratic societies:  a new era of personal and social responsibility"included a chapter written by Tuskegee University President Gilbert L. Rochon and and Thierno Thiam, professor of political science. The book, edited by Sjur Bergan, Ira Harkavy and Hilligje van’t Land, is a collection of commentaries and studies on the role of higher education on responsibility and democratic societies.

For their chapter, Rochon and Thiam assessed the governance model at Tuskegee. They used the university as an example of the history of success stories in American higher education governance. They also linked Tuskegee University, through its contributions, to societal changes that happened in America including the Civil Rights Movement and expanded voting rights.

“The chapter explains the people and events correlated with the embodiment of free thought at Tuskegee University,” the review stated.
