TUSKEGEE, Ala. (December 29, 2010) — Kevin J. McLin Sr. has been appointed by Tuskegee University’s president, Dr. Gilbert L. Rochon, as senior director of communications and public relations, effective January 3, 2011. McLin already serves as a member of Tuskegee’s Presidential Transition Team and as a special consultant to the President’s Inauguration Committee.
McLin, former publicist and spokesman for the late Superstar Michael Jackson, is a prominent public relations strategist and has had a successful career in broadcasting, music, and in higher education as a faculty member and administrator. McLin, a tenured associate professor, served as Chair of the School of Mass Communications at Dillard University in New Orleans, LA prior to coming to Tuskegee University. He also previously served as director of multi-intercollegiate interdisciplinary technological research at Dillard University.
In 1982, his band, Windjammer signed a recording contract with MCA Records, a division of what is now known as Universal/NBC. He served as producer, writer, and guitarist and is credited with 3 charted albums, 9 charted singles. His other work includes senior production news engineer at the NBC affiliate WDSU in New Orleans, LA. He developed the web design and coordinated press conferences and marketing activities for the City of Kenner, Louisiana, as well as developed the Cox Communications Franchise Agreement that allowed the city to program and run its own 24-hour government access channel. Additionally, he managed the day-to-day flow of information and breaking news to the media of the world’s most successful recording artist, Michael Jackson, and along with Sony Records developed international media strategy, campaigns, and media relations. McLin earned his B.A. in Journalism from Loyola University, New Orleans, LA, M.A. in Communications from the University of New Orleans, LA, and M.F.A in Communications specializing in television production from the University of New Orleans.
McLin, a New Orleans native, has over 50 music compositions that have been internationally published as well as 2 screenplays and 2 treatments that are in various stages of studio development. He has appeared on the Today Show, the CBS Morning Show, Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, BET, MTV, CNN, Fox News, NBC News, and CBS News. In 2007, he was awarded a $1.5 million dollar (USD) federal grant by the State Board of Regents in Louisiana to work on technology for the state’s film industry.
The senior director of communications and public relations is appointed by the President of Tuskegee University and serves as an integral member of the senior management team, and reports directly to the President. He is responsible for developing sound strategies, plans and tactics that will result in consistently reinforcing the view of Tuskegee University as an outstanding and highly competitive institution. It is also expected that he will design and implement a plan to increased exposure for Tuskegee University’s research, instructional and engagement initiatives with the local, regional, national and international print and electronic media. The senior director will provide oversight, leadership and hands-on responsibility for proposals, publications, public and media relations and special events.
