University to bring in holiday season with annual Golden Voices Christmas concert, tree lighting

TUSKEGEE, Alabama (December 1, 2011) — The Tuskegee University Golden Voices Choir will bring in the holiday season on campus with song. The annual concert will be held on Sunday in the University Chapel at 6:30 p.m. Preceding the concert, Tuskegee University President Gilbert L. Rochon will light the university Christmas trees inside and outside the chapel. The choir will then enter the chapel during a candlelight processional.

The 64-member ensemble will perform a selection of Christmas spirituals and popular traditional carols as well as the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah.” There will also be solo selections and pieces that invite audience participation.

“We try to produce a large work each year, just to present something new,” said choir director Wayne A. Barr. “It’s something for the community as well as for the students.”

This year, the choir will also present Franz Schubert’s “Mass in G,” a selection from their upcoming performance at New York’s Lincoln Center.
