Watkins crowned Miss Tuskegee University 2011-2012


Tuskegee, Ala. (April 14, 2011) - Tuskegee University students elected Breana M. Watkins as Miss Tuskegee University 2011-2012 on Thursday, April 14.

The pageant, held that evening in the Gen. Daniel "Chappie" James Center on campus, was judged by an independent panel. The traditional event began with an invocation, followed by a welcome, and an opening performance by the contestants. 

Watkins, a junior majoring in chemical engineering from Huntsville, Ala., is the daughter of Derwin and Tina Watkins. She holds the distinct pleasure of becoming the 82nd Miss Tuskegee University in the institution's history. Watkins competed against five other contestants in areas that highlighted the young women's oratorical skills, talent, poise and appearance.

First attendant, Leticia A. Hunt of San Jose, Calif. and second attendant, Lauren A. Kirksey of St. Louis, Mo., will serve as the new Miss Tuskegee University's court.

Mr. and Miss Tuskegee University 2010-2011, Byron Smith and Tori Massey gave the welcoming and farewell address and Dorothian McCray, Miss Tuskegee University, 2009-2010 served as mistress of ceremonies for the event. Tuskegee's men and women's glee clubs also performed.

Other contestants included Lindsey Lunsford of Columbus, Ind., and Brittany Johnson of Houston, Tx.

Prior to Thursday's pageant, contestants participated in a series of speak outs that allowed their peers to hear their platforms and intended missions. They also performed their talents in a pre-pageant before the crowning event.
