Irving William McConnell is CEO and founder of The McConnell Group, a health sciences corporation dedicated to supporting biomedical, healthcare and R&D programs with services and products at universities, industry and government facilities. Irving has managed numerous multidisciplinary research staff and held senior management positions at pharmaceutical companies to include Schering Plough, SmithKline Beecham, and Johnson & Johnson.
Irving earned his BS degree in Animal Science while minoring in Business, at Tuskegee University. Upon receiving his BS degree, he studied Veterinary Medicine and later received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (DVM). Other educational accomplishments include an Executive Fellowship in Science, Politic and Animal Health Policy from University of Maryland/Michigan State University; Executive Business Program at Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College and Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University; Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program at Babson College; Post Graduate Ophthalmology Training, University of Illinois and Laboratory Animal Medicine training with the US Army. Dr. McConnell is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Irving is a retired US Army Officer having served in the Veterinary Corps and the US Army Special Operations Command for over 27 years. He has received numerous military awards to include the Bronze Star and the Order of Military Medical Merit. He was also credited for saving the Baghdad Zoo during Operation Iraqi Freedom and discovering a foreign animal disease in Haiti after the Uphold Democracy stabilization.
Business awards include USEPA’s Outstanding Accomplishments by a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business Award; Booker T. Washington Economic Summit Entrepreneur Award, from Tuskegee University; Small Business Award of Excellence, by the US Small Business Administration (SBA); Small Business of the Year Award, from the Philadelphia African-American Chamber of Commerce; US SBA’s Minority Small Business Person of the Year Award; and US SBA’s Prime Contractor of the Year Administrator’s Award of Excellence.
Irving resides in Annapolis, Maryland with his wife Helene. They have twin daughters.
