While at Tuskegee he met his future wife, Anne Jones, and participated in acts of social justice like the march from Selma to Montgomery and the 1968 student-lead drive to improve the campus conditions.He had a successful career at the Xerox Corporation that spanned 32 years.

Johnson Haynes Jr., M.D.

Originally from Opelika, AL passed away in Mobile, AL on Dec.2, 2022.

After graduating from high school in 1971, he entered Tuskegee Institute, where he concentrated in pre-med studies and pledged the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He graduated from medical school at the University of South Alabama in 1980 to begin a career as an African-American trailblazer, the first to train as a resident and a fellow at USA (Univ of South Ala Health). He joined the faculty in 1984 as the first African-American clinical and basic sciences faculty member. He was a devoted mentor to countless medical students and residents and a tireless advocate for more opportunities in medicine for students from disadvantaged communities. In September 2022, USA named its sickle cell center, which he headed since 2001, in his honor.

The Alpha Phi Alpha Omega service was held at 7 pm on Thur., December 8, at Small’s Mortuary at 950 S. Broad Street in Mobile. The funeral service was held at 10:30 am on Friday, December 9, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 4051 on Old Shell Road. The burial service was held at 12 Noon on Sat, Dec. 10, at Garden Hills Cemetery in Opelika, Al. He went on to work for the federal government for 35 years with positions at the United States Patent and Trade Office, the United States Postal Service, and the Veterans Administration Hospital. He retired in 2005 from federal service.

After retiring from active duty, Jim was an independent certified Cisco Ntework Administrator Trainer where he traveled throughout the U.S. teaching network certification courses.

David Calloway Ross Jr., passed after a brief, non-COVID-19-related illness, the funeral home confirmed.
Ross, 72, was a lifelong Montgomery resident and U.S. Air Force veteran. He graduated from Tuskegee Institute and Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science and succeeded his father, David Calloway Ross Sr., as president of Ross-Clayton Funeral Home in 1978.
Ross is survived by his wife, Sarah Ann Ross, four children and one grandson.

Rear Admiral Gaston received a commission as an Ensign in the U.S Navy in December 1965. He had an impressive naval career spanning 31 years, including command of two destroyers and cruiser USS Josephus Daniels, and ashore as Commander Field Command, Defense Nuclear Agency and the first black Commander of Naval Training Center Great Lakes. He retired in 1995. Following retirement from the U.S. Navy, he pursued a successful corporate career at Waste Management, Inc. and Electronic Data Systems in senior executive positions.

and awards in recognition of his effort and contributions on improving the life of rural communities and African-Americans in the southern U.S. He was a 2012 inductee of the George Washington Carver Public Service Hall of Fame. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to:

She then attended Tuskegee Institute where she received her Doctorate in 1980. After receiving her DVM, Mickey began practicing medicine in Elk Point, South Dakota with Dr. Sidney Milburn. She was also the official Veterinarian for the State of Iowa Racing Commission. In 1981 she moved to Trenton, New Jersey and resided there for the next 19 years. In 2000, Mickey retired from the State of New Jersey Department of Agriculture and returned to Oak Ridge.

She was a Civil Rights pioneer and
longtime activist for human rights. She is best known as the woman in the iconic photo of the “Bloody Sunday” civil rights march. She was gassed and brutally beaten by law enforcement agents at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., on March 7, 1965. During the 50th anniversary of the march, she returned and was
personally escorted across the bridge by President Barack Obama. The Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African American History and Culture in collaboration with the Tuskegee University Archives will preserve and share the legacy of this civil rights pioneer.

Albert "Al" Joyner was the brother of syndicated radio personality Tom Joyner, and he was a successful owner of several Jackson-area McDonald's franchises. He as a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The Joyners run My Joy Inc., which is based in Ridgeland. Al Joyner and his wife, Danita are known for their philanthropic work.

the previous year on October 26, 2011.

professor of Pathology at the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary
Medicine, Nursing & Allied Health. Billups also served his country admirably as commander of the 422nd Medical Detachment, Rockville, Md. (1985-1989), and retired as Colonel of the United States Army Veterinary Corps, USAR in 1995. He returned to Tuskegee University to serve his alma mater as Associate Dean for Administration.
