Position: Clinical Instructor-Clinical Pathology                                         Department: Pathobiology/College of Veterinary Medicine

Status: Full-time; Exempt

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities

  • Perform fine needle aspirations, tissue imprints or other diagnostic procedures in a clinical setting
  • Assist in sample acquisition, sample submission, recording of microscopic findings and reporting results from specimens submitted to the clinical pathology laboratory after consultation with a faculty clinical pathologist
  • Perform all routine services provided by the clinical pathology laboratory, diagnostic interpretation of cytology, hematology, chemistry, and urine samples and consultation with clinicians, house officers, and veterinary students
  • Assist in the training of professional students in the DVM program, including providing extensive review of previously taught course material
  • Be available for after hour emergency call back during the week, on weekends, and during holidays
  • Operate automated analyzers, other equipment and perform other required functions (including maintenance and calibrations) in the VDSL clinical pathology laboratory
  • Receive on-the-job training necessary to become proficient in any and all procedures required for operation of the various diagnostic laboratories (Necropsy, Histopathology, Clinical Pathology, Microbiology, and Parasitology)
  • Record keeping and filing of all reports on the VDSL server
  • Perform all other duties as prescribed by the supervisor


  • DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) Degree, formal post-DVM training, and demonstrated ability to operate in the biomedical sciences as an assistant in a diagnostic laboratory setting
  • Minimally one year of experience in Clinical Pathology with the desire to attain Board certification or board-eligibility in the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP)
  • The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, evidence of effective teamwork, and a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community
  • The chosen candidate for the position will be encouraged to pursue Alabama veterinary licensure through the Alabama Board of Veterinary Examiners

Commensurate with education, training and experience: Salary is contingent upon outside funding.
