Special Qualifications:

Summary: The Director of Bands reports to the Department Head, Fine and Performing Arts.  The Director of Bands is responsible for all aspects of the band program, including recruiting and retaining student musicians.

Supervision Exercised: Supervision of student band leaders and assistants

Supervision Received: Dean, College of Arts & Sciences; Chair, Department of Fine and Performing Arts

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, develop, and direct University Bands (Marching Band, Concert Band, Basketball Pep Band, Jazz Lab Band), including establishing performance requirements, enforcing academic requirements and verifying each student’s ability to participate
  • Contribute to team effort by welcoming new and different work requirements
  • Explore new opportunities to enhance the services of the division
  • Help others accomplish related job results as and where needed
  • Develop relationships with area high school band directors and work with admissions staff to identify and recruit quality band members to the program
  • Direct the bands in on-campus performances for special events such as Commencement, concerts, sporting events, etc., and off-campus events such as parades and community concerts
  • Develop and implement on-campus recruitment initiatives
  • Coordinate with Athletics and Student Life as needed
  • Teach appropriate classes as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Work Environment, Physical Demands:

Multiple service hours; computer data input; multiple concurrent tasks with service interruptions; extensive customer contact; strict confidentiality; detailed work


Education and Experience: Master’s degree in Music Education required; Doctorate preferred. Three years of relevant experience. Or any combination of education, experience, or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

Specialized Training: Proficient in use of Microsoft Office programs

Commensurate with education, training and experience
