Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities

  • Supervisor in the Veterinary Clinical Pathology Diagnostic Laboratory.
  • Serve as a Veterinary Medical Laboratory Scientist in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory in the College of Veterinary Medicine, with responsibility for performing the full range of routine laboratory procedures in clinical chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, cytology, parasitology and coprology. 
  • Establish effective relationships between the laboratory and veterinary clinicians to ensure quality diagnostic services for patient care.  Evaluate requested procedures to determine suitability of specimens for analysis. 
  • Select, perform, evaluate and monitor non-routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumentation techniques in accordance with established protocols.  Recognize and react to indicators of malfunction, and locate and implement corrections. 
  • Identify and report malfunctions and/or breakdowns of equipment to the physical plant and other pertinent units; follow up on their repair. 
  • Write laboratory reports and submit test results appropriately and in a timely manner to the appropriate individuals. 
  • Ensure laboratory, equipment, and other accessories are in good working order. 
  • Order consumables and other supplies needed by students and instructors and in the laboratory. 
  • Set up student laboratories; supervise and assist in cleaning the laboratory and its ancillary rooms. 
  • Retrieve and clean items at the close of the laboratory day and time period of the course. 
  • Process, label or otherwise prepare fluid samples and other specimens, stain and coverslip specimens. 
  • Assist in preparing video programs for teaching purposes. 
  • Possess a willingness to be cross-trained in other diagnostic areas. 
  • Must be willing to receive on-the-job training necessary to become proficient in operating the laboratory. 
  • Submit periodic reports on laboratory accessions. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the clinical pathologist and department head


  • Bachelor of Science as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Biological/Premedical Sciences or closely related discipline
  • GED/High School Diploma and at least five years of laboratory experience including handling of samples, ordering and stocking of supplies preferred
  • Must be able to communicate effectively
  • Must have good computer skills (Microsoft Office and other software programs)
  • Must have good motor coordination and manual dexterity
  • Must have demonstrated collegiality
  • Must work well with others
