President and Mrs Brown holding their dogs named Crimson and PipersDr. Mark A. Brown, president and CEO, and First Lady Gwendolyn Jackson Brown have welcomed two four-legged bundles of joy – European Doberman puppies Crimson and Piper, now both 11 weeks old. Named for Tuskegee’s legendary marching band, The Crimson Pipers, the rambunctious twosome visited Dr. Brown in his office for the first time Friday.

“I think they were curious to know more about what keeps me so busy and away from playtime with them at Grey Columns,” joked Dr. Brown, as the puppies took in the sights, sounds and smells with wide-eyes and lots of snuggles.

“They really do become a part of the family, don’t they?” the First Lady added, sharing the she and Dr. Brown have a particular fondness for Dobermans but have owned other breeds, too.

The European Doberman puppies joined Dr. Brown and Mrs. Brown at home on campus in October and are two among the many animals receiving very special care at the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine Small Animal Hospital.

Tuskegee broke ground in September on an $18 million expansion of the small animal teaching hospital on campus, continuing the university’s 80-year legacy as a leader in training veterinarians in the United States.

“Crimson and Piper had a great visit with Dr. Steven Walker in our small animal hospital,” said Dr. Brown.  “Students joined Dr. Walker for the visit as the puppies got some of their required shots.  Mrs. Brown and I also learned some good tips on how to help with their adjustment to their new home.”
