Tuskegee University Police Chief Kareem Easley recently presented at the 10
th annual National Student Safety & Security Conference and Workshop in Las Vegas, Nevada, joining more than 300 first responders, school resource officers, safety professionals, mental health professionals, educators and community leaders from across the country to work together in pursuit of safer campuses.
Chief Easley presented during one of the panels on the “Safety for All” strategy to deepen relationships between the Tuskegee University Police Department and the people they serve and protect.
“The conference included an important hands-on feature — real-world simulations of community response to school shootings and related tragedies,” said Chief Easley. “Community policing is at the center of our strategy at Tuskegee to involve everyone – students, faculty, staff, and our neighbors – as active stakeholders in preventing harm, violence and crime on our campus.”
He attended sessions on school violence including shootings, bullying, dating violence, vandalism, gang activity, and catastrophic events confronting campuses and communities everywhere. Participants experienced role-playing sessions, breakout lectures, panels on pressing issues in addition to the hands-on workshops.
“I’m elated that a national forum chose Chief Easley and the Tuskegee security teams’ response and posture as an example of ‘how to do it’! In just a short window, Chief Easley has shown his experience in community policing and working collaboratively to ensure the safety of our campus,” said Dr. Mark A. Brown, President and CEO. “I look forward to Chief Easley applying information from the conference to our community policing and campus security efforts here as we remain focused on ensuring the well-being of those joining us on campus. At Tuskegee, we expect not just our students but our faculty and staff to remain life-long learners, and Chief Easley is working to develop, train and grow our team.”
