Students and University officials, faculty and staff at the vigilTuskegee University students, faculty and staff gathered at the Booker T. Washington Monument Thursday afternoon for a candle light vigil honoring the life of Jade Callwood, who passed away last week following a sudden and unexpected medical emergency.

During the vigil, 21 candles were lit to glow in remembrance, one for each year of her life.

“Words are not sufficient,” said Dr. Mark A. Brown, president and CEO as he acknowledged the terrible void left for those who loved Jade.  “A piece of all of us has been taken away with her, but honor her by going on.”

Dr. Cecil A. Duffie, Dean of the University Chapel led mourners in prayer and offered words of encouragement for the Callwood family and all that this tragedy has touched.  Student Government Association President, Avery Thomas, reminded those gathered to value their friendships and relationships dearly.

Through her grief, Sahalie Wilson, reflected on meeting Jada during freshman year and the small comfort of remembering the joy they shared the last day they were together. “She was my best friend.”
