Tuskegee University’s Faith Week is underway, with a week of events Jan. 19 through Jan. 25 centered around interfaith curiosity, intentional connection, and intergenerational community building.

“We are excited to create a space for our community, far and wide, to center around commonalities and differences, especially highlighting faith,” said Dr. Mark Brown, president and CEO. “It is important for us to be exposed to a diversity of perspectives to challenge our biases and expand our knowledge. These events support that way of thinking.”

The theme, “Curiosity Connection Community,” is what Dr. Cecil A. Duffie, dean of the chapel, considers the mantra and mandate of the Chapel.

“We want this to be a place where the Tuskegee community can explore deep thought, develop bonds, and cultivate a sense of belonging,” said Rev. Duffie.

The week began on Monday with a celebration of Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. during a Chapel Day of Service. More than 115 student volunteers rolled up their sleeves to refresh Chapel spaces, including scraping and painting wall and organizing closet areas.

Other events for students include a “Worship and Wings Prayer Nite,” an interfaith game night and spades tournament, and a training seminar for student leaders by Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network concerning civic engagement and voter empowerment.

The week will conclude with a gospel concert featuring the Tuskegee University Golden Voices choir on Friday, Jan 23 and Chapel service on Sunday, Jan. 25, both open to the public. The guest speaker for Chapel, the Rev. Dr. Winford K. Rice, is a scholar and preacher. He serves as the senior pastor of Beulah Baptist Church of Atlanta, and professor of religion at Morehouse College.

Faith Week commemorates what Dr. Gregory S. Gray, Sr., former dean of the chapel, once called a “university-wide acknowledgement of the important role which religious faith or spirituality serves in the never-ending journey toward human freedom and wholeness.”
