Housing Office Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the housing office are to provide on-campus housing for all students residing in the Residence Halls, Commons, and Marable Apartments. Students must be accepted to the University and be enrolled full-time for an academic year or semester.

It is the responsibility of the housing office to receive and assign all students who have applied for on-campus housing. Freshmen, Sophomores, and first-year transfer students (students having less than 60 hrs. cumulative) are required to live on campus in a residence hall and to participate in the central dining hall meal program.

The housing department is responsible for assigning over 1800 students to our residence halls and apartments. We also share the responsibility with Physical Plant Services in receiving and tracking all maintenance concerns for our students who reside in the apartments. Every effort is made to comply with applicants' requests. However, since some halls/apartments fill more rapidly than others, the housing office will make assignments as space is available.

Residence Hall Fines Appeal

Students wishing to appeal a Housing and Residence Life fine imposed by a hall director or counselor should follow the procedure below:

Step 1: The student must make a complaint in writing to the hall director/counselor involved, citing supporting evidence justifying the complaint/appeal. Copies of the complaint will be forwarded to the dean of students and director of housing and residence life.

Step 2: The hall director/counselor involved reviews the written complaint/appeal and supporting documentation, then interviews the complainant and any witnesses before making a decision on the student’s appeal.

Step 3: The hall director/counselor notifies the student of his/her decision in writing and provides copies to the dean of students and director of housing and residence life.

Step 4: If the student is dissatisfied with the decision, he/she may appeal to the director of housing and residence life, along with providing all supporting documentation.

Step 5: The director of housing and residence life may appoint a committee to review the appeal or present the appeal to the Residence Hall Judicial Board for review and recommendation(s).

Step 6: The Residence Hall Judicial Board provides the director of housing and residence life with its decision in writing.

Step 7: The director of housing and residence life notifies the student of the decision and provides copies of the notification to the dean of students and vice president for student affairs and enrollment management.

Step 8: If the student is still not satisfied, a final appeal may be made to the dean of students. All supporting documentation is provided to the dean of students, including decisions and recommendations previously made by the director of housing and residence life and the Residence Hall Judicial Board.

Step 9: The dean of students, after review of all pertinent documentation, renders a decision and informs the student of that decision in writing, as well as provides copies to the director of housing and residence life, the hall director/counselor involved, and vice president for student affairs and enrollment management.

Eligibility

General Eligibility for Apartments
To be eligible for campus apartment housing, a student must be accepted at the University and enrolled for a minimum of 12 undergraduate semester hours or 6 graduate hours. Part-time students must request special permission to reside on campus.

All students who have completed three (3) semesters with a minimum of 45 hours and have a 2.3 GPA or higher are eligible to apply for apartment living. Students must have at least 60 cumulative hours prior to June 1, 2023, to be assigned to an apartment. Independent students over 24 years of age are eligible. Students receiving Tuskegee University scholarships and Alabama Incentive Plans are not eligible unless they pay the full room rate. Family discounts are excluded.

Requirement
The University requires Freshmen and Sophomore students (those with less than 60 credit hours) and first-time transfer students to live on campus in a residence hall. Students classified as such will be automatically charged room and board for the entire academic year. The only exceptions are independent students at least 24 years old, married students, and married Macon County residents whose parents have established residency. Alabama (Macon County) residency is established when a parent or legal guardian has lived in Alabama for at least one year prior to the start of the Fall semester.

Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students may elect to live in the University Commons Apartments, Marable Apartments, or off-campus.

Contract Info
Housing contracts are issued for one full year and cannot be canceled. The contract can be found under the Housing Profile Questions tab in eRezlife. In certain extreme emergencies, students who break housing contracts are subject to a lease cancellation fee of $1,450 plus prorated rental fees for time lived in the unit.

Damages
Damages to rental units will be assessed by the Director of Housing based on the damage rate schedule.
