Engaging in Groundbreaking Research

Grants and contracts play a vital role in supporting the University's mission, by strengthening academic programs and enabling groundbreaking research. These funds allow our institution to attract top-tier faculty, develop innovative curricula, and provide students with enriched learning experiences. More importantly, they empower our university to pursue research that addresses global challenges—from public health and climate change to technological innovation and social equity—creating knowledge that drives progress and benefits society at large.

Dr.Vijaya Rangari Headshot
Welcome to the Office of Research which is headed by the Vice President for Research. The Office is responsible for the development and implementation of aggressive plans  to insure that Tuskegee University’s research capability and annual research funding from federal agencies and other sources are substantially enhanced and making sure that Tuskegee University is in complete compliance with state and federal regulations in implementing research and other sponsored programs.

Since its creation in 1996, the Office of Research has more than doubled its annual funding for research and other sponsored programs. Tuskegee University’s annual funding for Research and other Sponsored Programs currently ranges from $40 to $84 million. Credit for this enormous success goes to faculty members and staff, who continue to search for resources and write winning proposals. The staff members in the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs and various departments of Business and Fiscal Affairs are also to be commended for their enthusiastic support of the researchers in the grantsmanship process. These grants and contracts not only allow us to fulfill the research mission of Tuskegee University but also make a huge impact on our academic programs. Tuskegee University’s four Ph.D. programs are prime examples of programs that are offered solely based on the expertise and resources developed by the faculty members.

Felecia Moss Grant, Associate Director

Felecia Grant HeadshotThe Office of Grantsmanship and Compliance  (OGC) supports and enhances the research infrastructure within the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs, and ensures that the University adheres to compliance regulations of all federal agencies.  The regulations stipulate that institutions receiving federal funds for research and other sponsored programs must have policies and procedures in place to ensure that federal, state and local requirements are met in the use of funds and conduct research.

Federal funding could be lost or not granted when the applicant institution does not comply with the mandated requirements.  The OGC coordinates the assurance process for faculty and staff through the Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs.  Compliance review is an essential function of the application process and is applicable to all projects involving human subjects, vertebrate animals, carcinogens, recombinant DNA, biological and chemical hazardous material and proprietary materials.

Office of Technology Transfer

Welcome to the Office of Technology Transfer

Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) provides services for Tuskegee University Innovators, from protecting intellectual property to the commercialization of new discoveries through licensing and/or new enterprise development. It serves as a link between the commercial marketplace and Tuskegee University faculty. OTT offers Tuskegee University researchers expertise and guidance regarding the protection of intellectual property, including patents and copyrights, and in seeking licensing agreements with commercial entities to take Tuskegee University research developments into the marketplace for the public benefit.

Technology Transfer is led by the Vice President, Research and Sponsored Programs.

Tuskegee University Technology Transfer Process

The Office of Technology Transfer aims for efficiency and expediency in handling your inventions and innovative new ideas. Below are the steps our office takes to help you begin the journey to protecting your intellectual property.

Step 1
Visit the Tuskegee University Patent and
Trademark Resource Center

The resource center offers for your patents and copyrights
needs.  Please click on the link below for additonal information:

Tuskegee University Patent and Trademark Resouce
Center

Contact Information:
Dr. Constance Caddell
Phone: 334-725-2374
Email:  ccaddell@tuskegee.edu

Step 2
File a Disclosure

File a Disclosure Formimmediately, if you believe
your invention has the potential to be patent protected.

IMPORTANT:  It is critical to avoid public
disclosure of your innovation before filing
a patent application.

Step 3
Present your Invention

Present your invention to the
Intellectual Property Committee.
During this presentation you will pitch
your idea/invention to the committee,
attempting to convince them why
TU should pursue patent protection.

Step 4
Protection

The patent attorney team will file your
disclosure with the
 United States Patent
and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Inventors work directly with TU's outside
patent attorneys.

Step 5
Marketing

Your contacts may be very helpful as we contact
potential licensees during the marketing process.
Non-disclosure agreements are signed to interest
company to review more detailed and unpublished
data and information and to potentially
visit your lab.

Step 6
Selecting a Partner/Business Start-up

Select a company that shows interest in
the invention.
If a new  business start-up
has been chosen as a commercialization path,
OTT will assist in planning, creating and
funding the start-up.

Step 7
Licensing

A License agreement is a contract between TU
and a third parry in which TU's rights to a technology
are licensed (without relinquishing owernship)
for financial and other consideration. Licensing is
a team approach involving
both OTT and the inventor(s).

Step 8
Commercialization

The licensee contnues the advancement of the
technology, and makes other buisness investments
to develop the product or service.

Step 9
Revenue

Revenues recieved by TU are distributed to
University and inventors to fund
additional research and education and to
encourage further participation in
innovation.
