The Legacy

Building on a legacy of excellence and service, Tuskegee continues to honor the proud tradition of the Tuskegee Airmen, who blazed trails as the first African American military aviators during World War II. Their courage, skill, and determination not only contributed to the Allied victory but also laid the foundation for the desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Today, Tuskegee's commitment to leadership, discipline, and service shines through its ROTC programs. Whether it’s Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or the Space Force, Tuskegee University empowers students to lead and serve at the highest levels.

Be a part of this historic legacy!

The History of ROTC at Tuskegee University

The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program at Tuskegee University (“TU”) has a rich and unique history. The TU ROTC program began in 1918, just after World War I, and has continued to produce military officers, in all branches of the Armed Forces, since that time. It is a prestigious program that vaunts pioneers and leaders of African-American military service.

TU ROTC graduated and produced the first African-American four-star general, General Daniel “Chappie” James. Its Professors of Military Science have included legendary military leaders, including General Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., the first African-American General Officer in the military, and General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., commander of the Tuskegee Airmen, and the first African-American General Officer in the Air Force.
