Animal, Poultry, and Veterinary Sciences graduate serves producers and youth through research-based Extension education
CAENS alum Taylor Smith has joined the Tuskegee University Cooperative Extension family as an Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent. Smith earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal, Poultry, and Veterinary Sciences from Tuskegee University.
As a county Extension agent, Smith primarily serves Macon and Montgomery Counties. In this role, she provides research-based education and technical assistance to producers and community members, with a focus on beef cattle production, reproductive management, herd health, and producer education.
Smith also works closely with youth and students to promote agricultural literacy, leadership development, and hands-on learning opportunities in livestock and natural resources.
Before becoming an Extension Agent, Smith served Tuskegee University in multiple roles. She worked as a Research Assistant on the research and teaching farm, where she assisted with day-to-day livestock management, reproductive research, and applied production practices. She also served as a consultant with the Caprine Research Unit, gaining hands-on experience in small ruminant research and production systems.
These experiences helped prepare her for a career that blends research, education, and practical agriculture.
“As a producer myself, I value building relationships with producers based on shared experience and offering practical, research-based solutions that fit real-world operations,” Smith said. “At the same time, I enjoy introducing youth to livestock production and helping them develop skills, confidence, and an understanding of the opportunities available in agriculture.”
Smith said one of the most meaningful parts of her work is being able to support producers today while helping prepare the next generation of agricultural leaders.
One thing many of her co-workers may not know is that Smith personally bred all of her cattle through artificial insemination. Her first AI-conceived calf was recently born, a milestone that reflects her hands-on knowledge and commitment to livestock production.
Being both an Extension Agent and an active producer allows Smith to bring a producer-first perspective to her work. It strengthens her ability to relate to the challenges, goals, and daily realities of the producers she serves.
Smith is from Hayneville in Lowndes County, located in the heart of Alabama’s Black Belt. She is a graduate of Calhoun High School and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in the same field at Tuskegee University.
